Defending Lafayette from fires for over 100 years, the City of Lafayette's Fire Department now has 7 fire stations strategically placed throughout Lafayette. What started as a small force dedicated to protecting a small town has become a force of over 100 firefighters.
LFD's “annual” Fire Prevention Show is held the week of National Fire Prevention Week in October. Attendance in 2019 consisted of over 3500 children in grades (pre-K through 2) from Lafayette, West Lafayette, Tippecanoe and Rossville School Corporations, as well as private schools and daycares in the Greater Lafayette community. State Farm Insurance continued to be a corporate sponsor of this event. Once again this year, State Farm provided LFD with financial support to allow LFD to reimburse school corporations’ transportation costs and to provide each child that attended a red plastic fire helmet as a memento of this event.
Each year the event delights children with Sparky the Fire Dog. The Lafayette Fire Prevention Division uses Sparky the Fire Dog, the best known figure in fire prevention, as an exciting tool for teaching fire and safety awareness. Sparky can be seen at the county fair, schools, community events, and is part of the Annual Fire Prevention Show.
